Do You Know What the "Feels Like" Temperature is in Your Home?

Do You Know What the "Feels Like" Temperature is in Your Home?If the reading on your thermostat's display doesn't seem to match the comfort level in your home, you're experiencing a disconnect between the actual and "feels like" temperatures. The amount of moisture in the air, or the humidity level, is often the cause this frustrating inconsistency, and here's why it occurs.

The Effect of Humidity on Air Conditioning

Your cooling system draws heat and moisture from the air inside your home, but its ability to do both decreases when the outdoor humidity level climbs. When the A/C gets overwhelmed by moisture-laden air, it may bring the temperature down to your usual thermostat setting, but your home can still feel uncomfortably sticky because the humidity level hasn't dropped sufficiently.

Equipment Capacity and the "Feels Like" Temperature

Equipment that's oversized will quickly reach the temperature you've set on the thermostat, then cycle off again without dehumidifying effectively. When this occurs, your home can alternate between feeling too cold and clammy and too hot and sticky, even though the thermostat's temperature setting is being satisfied.

How to Balance Actual and "Feels Like" Temperatures

To bring the "feels like" and actual temperatures into balance, you need to lower the humidity level in your home. The ideal range for comfort is 30 to 50 percent. Here are some suggestions on how to achieve better humidity control:

  • Maintain your cooling equipment — An air conditioner handles humidity more effectively when it's well maintained and able to run at its full capacity and maximum energy efficiency.
  • Schedule a cooling system assessment — An experienced HVAC pro can inspect the system to determine whether the equipment is sized correctly for your home and if the ductwork is well-designed and in good condition. Both of these factors impact your A/Cs humidity control capabilities.
  • Consider installing a dehumidifier — Your HVAC pro can advise you whether you can benefit from adding a dehumidifier to the HVAC system to reduce the A/Cs workload and energy consumption, and boost your comfort.
